2006.03.04 Beausoleil Island - cross country

We parked in Honey Harbour and skied west out into Georgian Bay, crossing Roberts Island and reaching Beausoleil Island at the Tonch Point South campsite. We headed north to Chimney Bay and crossed Beausoleil Island via Fairy Lake. Then on to a small island we nicknamed North Pole at the western end of a chain of islands to the northwest of Beausoleil. One of the really interesting things was a sheet of clear ice two to three inches thick that from a distance had the appearance of open water; see the photo below.

In the picture, Harvey is testing the ice. To the right are Steve and Dorothy.

From here we skied south to the lighthouse at Brebeuf Island, then on to the Gin Islands and to Beausoleil Point. We had the wind at our backs for this 8 kilometre stretch. At times could skate ski. At other times the snow was piled into drifts or there was bare ice.

Then we headed northeast, aiming for the area between Roberts Island and the mainland. We were lucky in that somehow the wind was still mostly at our backs.

I found it interesting to ski here as I had kayaked in the same area in late summer and on Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks Steve for organizing a great trip.

I’ve gathered a number of photos into a slide show that you can download and view. The file size is 1.8 MB. You will need Adobe Reader (a free download) to play the slide show.  To download and view the slide show, right-click here and choose Save Target As. For more information on this click here.
